About

Welcome to the Abuse by LPAs web pages and Blog – all about understanding, stopping and recovering from abuse that is perpetrated by those who have Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) over others.

Abuse by LPA attorneys

The abhorrent problem of abuse by LPA attorneys is a hidden and poorly understood issue in UK society. This is partly because – up to now – there is no single place that brings together news stories, court cases, factual information and practical advice about identifying and stopping this type of abuse.

We do know it is a growing problem; the number of referrals to the OPG about safeguarding concerns and the number of investigations of LPA attorneys has increased year on year. There are now over 8 million people with appointed LPA attorneys (in England & Wales alone) who all need greater protection.

The first Blog post is on the scale of LPA abuse in the UK, and a second Blog post on the nature and diversity of abuse by LPA attorneys was published in February 2025.

About the AbuseByLPAs website & Blog

These web pages and the Blog aim to:

  • Raise awareness and understanding of the nature and scale of abuse by those who have Lasting Powers of Attorney over others.
  • Collect and share personal accounts of abuse perpetrated by LPA attorneys – so that the causes, common signs, and impacts of such abuse can be better known.
  • Signpost information, resources and other organisations to support victims and survivors of LPA abuse and others affected.
  • Share, discuss and advocate strategies for better preventing, identifying and stopping abuse by LPAs – and also bringing the abusers to justice.

These web pages are mainly intended to help people in the UK affected by, wanting to learn about, and seeking to prevent LPA abuse.

What these pages do not cover

Sadly, LPA abuse often occurs alongside other types of abuse and fraud, such as predatory marriage and the fraudulent and coercive making of wills. While these web pages do not directly focus on these other forms of abuse/fraud and coercive behaviour, we acknowledge their importance and often horrific impacts. There is growing evidence that LPA abuse often involves abuse – or attempts to abuse and control – vulnerable older people in these other ways.

Who maintains these web pages?

These web pages have been created by and are maintained by Rob – who has experience of a close relative being abused by their LPA attorney. Others affected by LPA abuse have informed the aims of the web pages, and helped ensure – as much as possible – that the content is as accurate and useful as possible.

I have done my best to rely on authoritative information sources, such as the OPG or Hourglass web pages. For use of royalty-free photos, I am grateful to the Centre for Better Aging’s Age-positive Image Library. Other royalty free photos are usually from Pixabay or Unsplash.

I very much welcome feedback on the content, usefulness or accuracy of these web pages. FEEDBACK button should be visible at bottom right of screen
